Jimmy Cliff as Ivanhoe Martin in "The Harder They Come."

By Rohan Preston Just as the weather is about to change in Minnesota, the sights and sounds of the Caribbean will wash over the Suburban World cinema. A monthly film series called "Roti and Reel" kicks off this weekend in the Uptown Minneapolis venue at a time when the forecast calls for the Twin Cities' first significant snowfall this season. "The Harder They Come," Perry Henzel's 1972 classic feature that starred Jimmy Cliff as an aspiring entertainer navigating the cut-throat music industry, inaugurates the series Sunday at the Suburban World Theatre in Minneapolis. The film was recently made into a musical that was a hit in London. Upcoming films include"Countryman" (Dec. 12) and "Rockers" (Jan. 9, 2011). The series, under the aegis of the newly formed Caribbean Cultural Development organization, is not only about classic films. It is also about music and culture. Guests will be entertained before the features by Pan Dimensions, a steel drum ensemble featuring Lance Pollonais and Charles Petrus. Patrons will also get to sample Caribbean cuisine, including roti, a flatbread used to wrap meats and veggies. It traveled from the East to the West Indies during the colonial era. Parental guidance is recommended for the unrated films. 5-8 p.m. Sun., Suburban World Theatre, 3022 Hennepin Avenue- Minneapolis. $20. 952-270-6700 or www.suburbanworldtheatre.com.
