The Winona County Board has ordered a basic environmental review for a proposed frac sand mine that could be the first to operate in greater Winona County.

More than 300 citizens signed a petition requesting that the proposed Nisbit mine complete an Environmental Assessment Worksheet as part of the regulatory permitting process. The proposed dig-and-haul mine is located in Saratoga Township.

The petition was adopted on a 3-2 vote, stopping any mining at the site until the worksheet is completed and reviewed.
