DFL gubernatorial contender Matt Entenza has spent nearly $4 million, most of it from his own wealth, to get a major head start over other candidates.

Entenza released a statement Monday that didn't specify how much money he has poured into the campaign. But spokesman Jeremy Drucker said that only $672,483 came from "outside sources," with the remainder coming from Entenza.

Drucker said Entenza had receipts of $3.9 million in 2010 on top of about $380,000 in 2009. Subtracting the $672,483 in money from outside sources would mean Entenza contributed about $3.6 million.

Last week he reported contributing an additional $450,000 of his own money to the campaign, which is not included in the latest report because it came in after the July 19 disclosure deadline.

His statement Monday said he has $132,065 in cash on hand to spend.

His statement Monday comes a day before pre-primary campaign finance reports are released by the state Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board.

Entenza has long been expected to spend family wealth on his campaign. His wife, Lois Quam, is a former health care industry executive who made tens of millions of dollars.

DFLer Mark Dayton, who also is expected to tap family wealth, did not disclose any details Monday of his fundraising, but his report will be released by the state Tuesday.

Drucker said "almost no money" came from political action groups or lobbyists.

Entenza has been aggressive in buying advertising spots soon after the DFL convention this spring.
