An Ely police officer was indicted Friday on a charge that he had sex with a teenage girl.

A St. Louis County grand jury indicted Sgt. Jason Allen Carlson, 37, of Aurora, on one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

He stands accused of engaging in sexual relations with a minor while he was in a position of authority over her. The young woman was at least 16 but younger than 18 at the time of the alleged incident in December 2014.

Carlson is a patrol segeant and 10-year veteran of the Ely police force. Ely Police Chief John Lahtonen said the sergeant remains on paid administrative leave, as he has since the allegations came to light.

"Other than that, I don't have a comment," Lahtonen said.

The charges against Carlson were sealed until Friday's indictment. Judge Gary Pagliaccetti set Carlson's bail at $15,000 and refered him for supervised release. Carlson's next hearing is set for Dec. 21.
