Billy Bye was the Edina football coach from1958-60 and had an undefeated state championship team in 1960. Stav Canakes coached the Hornets from 1961-89, posting a 203-69-1 record with 16 Lake Conference championships and five state titles. Both former coaches passed away in the last year.

Edina High School will recognize the Bye and Canakes families during halftime of Thursday's game against Minneapolis Washburn. Family members will be on the field while announcements outlining the careers of Coach Bye and Coach Canakes will be made. The current Edina team will also be on the field, and the captains will present each family with an Edina helmet. The Hornets are honoring the coaches this season with football-shaped stickers on their helmets that say "BILLY" and "STAV." Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, the Edina Football Association will host a barbeque, with a special invitation extended to Bye and Canakes' friends and former players.
