An Eden Prairie man will get 65 years in prison after he admitted to killing his wife and the fetus she was carrying.

Yevgeniy Savenok, 31, faced two counts of first-degree murder for stabbing his wife, Lyuba Savenok, in their home in May 2016. Their son, named Ellis, was born through an emergency Caesarean section, but died a few minutes later. As part of a plea deal, he will be sentenced on two counts of intentional second degree murder.

Savenok admitted in court Thursday morning that he went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed his wife at least 11 times in the chest and neck, according to the Hennepin County attorney's office and the criminal complaint. Two of the stabs cut the jugular vein and a major artery near the heart. He also acknowledged that the baby was not injured by the knife, but that because of the mother's injuries, there was fetal stress and ultimately the baby died and he was responsible under the doctrine of transfer of intent, prosecutors said.

After the stabbing, Savenok fled with his two children in an SUV before surrendering to St. Paul police, according to the criminal complaint.

When police went the Eden Prairie home, Lyuba's sister told them she saw Yevgeniy Savenok put his wife in a headlock from behind and put a knife to her throat as she screamed for her life, the complaint read.

Investigators traced a long and "turbulent domestic history" between the two, charges said. Lyuba Savenok had reached out to police several times — in Minnesota and earlier in northern Illinois — regarding "incidents of domestic assault" at the hands of her husband. At one point, an order for protection was issued.
