The gymnasium at Eastview High School received a facelift a few years back, and when next year's sports seasons start up there will be more changes.

Veteran girls' basketball coach Paul Goetz announced last week that he has stepped down from the position so he can spend time watching his son play basketball at Rosemount. Garrett Goetz will be a sophomore for the Irish next season. He appeared in six varsity games this season as a freshman.

Paul Goetz, the only girls' varsity coach Eastview has had in 14 seasons, will remain on the Lightning staff as an assistant. During his tenure as head coach, Eastview won five conference championships and four section titles. In those four trips to state, the Lightning has finished runner-up twice and notched a pair of third-place finishes.

Eastview hired Melissa Guebert as its new head coach. She was South Dakota's Miss Basketball in 1982 and later played at Augustana where she was a three-time all-conference player, earned first team academic honors and finished as the all time leading scorer in school history. That record (2,001 points) still stands.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this program over the years as a spectator," Guebert said in an e-mailed statement. "Coach Goetz has created a basketball program at Eastview that has had tremendous success on and off the court, and I hope to continue and build on those traditions. I am very excited to now be a part of the Eastview High School community and hope to try and enhance what is already an incredible program."
