EAST PREPARES FOR SUPERSTORM

• The effects of the storm called "Frankenstorm" - as Sandy hits two winter weather systems -- could hit as early as Sunday. The rare hybrid storm could cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes, with snow, wind and flooding.

• States of emergency: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia, Pennsylvania and Maine have declared states of emergency.

• Plans: New Jersey evacuated its barrier islands, all Atlantic City casinos, New York was considering shutting down the subways to avoid flooding and half a dozen states warned residents to prepare for several days of lost power.

• Airlines encouraged people with flights scheduled in the next few days to change their plans, waving cancellation fees.

• The Caribbean death toll rose to again sharply on Saturday, even as the storm swirled away toward the U.S. East Coast. Officials said at least 58 people.
