Need some motivation to work out? An exercise physiologist and physician at the Mayo Clinic is inviting Rochester residents to exercise for free.

Citing a public health problem of physical inactivity, Dr. Michael Joyner recently began leading an exercise group on Saturday mornings at the Soldiers Field track, inviting everyone to show up and move no matter the weather.

One group session drew more than 25 people. A typical hourlong session includes a warmup, a calisthenics circuit with push-ups and squats, walking and jogging. Some finish with a two-mile run. People can move at their own pace and abilities, Joyner said.

Modeled after a program in Lawrence, Kan., the session is designed to show people that fitness doesn't have to be complicated. "You don't need equipment, you don't need a gym membership," he said. "There's a lot of old-school stuff you can do."

Participants told Joyner they were surprised at the effects of some of the exercises. "They've forgotten how sore old-school calisthenics can make you."
