1. Night walk

Gateway State Trail, 5-8 p.m. Saturday

Walk along a luminaria-lit segment of the Gateway State Trail in Maplewood and warm up around campfires stationed along the way. Hot cider and other refreshments will be served. More information: 651-231-6968 or www.mndnr.gov/ptcalendar.

2. Pond life through ice

Fort Snelling State Park, 1-2 p.m. Sunday

Meet next to the fishing pier at Snelling Lake to learn how aquatic insects survive the cold in winter when lakes are frozen, and how pond life adapts to the changing seasons. More information:

3. Snowshoeing

Fort Snelling State Park, 1-2:30 p.m. Monday

Explore the wintry park on a hike with a park naturalist at this youth and adult program. To register, call 612-725-2724. More information: www.mndnr.gov/ptcalendar.

4. Cross-country skiing

Hyland Lake Park Reserve, 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday

Learn beginning ski-skating techniques, including efficient edging, gliding and control. Prior classic skiing experience recommended. Otherwise, a private lesson is encouraged. Cost is $24, or $40 with ski rental. This lesson is for ages 13 and older.
