A trail system favored by the cross-country skiing masses will host a new race in mid-January.

Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington will put on the Twin Cities Orthopedics Ski Rennet on Jan. 23.

"We wanted a way to celebrate these trails and let people know about them," said race director Alex McKinney of the Three Rivers Parks District. "The goal was to put on an event that was not just an average Wednesday night ski race, but something that would really shine and make these trails show how great they are. Our goal really is to be one of the best races in the nation."

The Ski Rennet features four events: a challenging 26-kilometer race; 10K race; 2K para-skiing race; and 2K kids race. McKinney is excited about showcasing the Hyland cross-country trail system. There also is a related high school race earlier in the week.

The area's snow-making ability is significant, too, McKinney said. "Even in those low snow years, we're really going to be able to put on a phenomenal race for people." Registration is open to the first 600 skiers.

Details on all the races are at threeriversparks.org/rennet.
