From my colleague Randy Furst. An Arizona-based company has agreed to pay $1.5 million in consumer refunds as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations it was selling weight loss acai berry pills, "colon cleansers" and other products using fraudulent free trial offers. Central Coast Nutraceuticals Inc. also touted phony endorsements from talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray , the FTC said. The FTC also alleged that the company made misleading and false health claims. The firm claimed to offer a "free" trial for a nominal fee and full refunds upon request, the FTC said, but repeatedly made unauthorized charges to consumers' bank accounts and made it impossible to avoid paying full price for the products, typically $39.95 to $59.95.
