The basics: This park is named after President Theodore Roosevelt, who first encountered the rugged Badlands in 1883 as a place to hunt and ranch. The park's three separate sections — the South, the North and the Elkhorn Ranch units — provide a range of wonders, including the Petrified Forest, the Painted Canyon and herds of American bison.
