Eating out: Enjoy a taste of the Caribbean at the Whistling Bird in Gilbert, with Jamaican specialties such as jerk chicken and coconut curry shrimp. Open for dinner only (1-218-741-5030; www.thewhistlingbird.com).

Getting there: Embarrass is about four hours north of the Twin Cities and 15 miles south of Tower.

Other activities: Giants Ridge near Biwabik, best known as a ski resort, is also home to two award-winning golf courses, the Legend and the Quarry (1-218-865-8000; www.giantsridge.com).
