Designer Candice Olson gives a master bedroom a face-lift

The problem

A couple wanted a master bedroom retreat, but their existing space was sparsely decorated, with a waterbed taking center stage and TV trays as bedside tables.

The solution

Designer Candice Olson created a serene escape using many of the couple's existing furnishings.

How it happened

• The homeowners love their waterbed, so it had to stay. Olson gave this 1980s relic a facelift with a tall, custom headboard upholstered in contrasting neutral fabrics, finished off with nailhead trim. Waterbed sheets are nonexistent these days, so they had to be custom-made, along with a custom bed skirt to conceal the bed frame.

• Two stylish nightstands with beautiful wood-tiled inlay flank the bed, replacing those old TV trays. And, instead of table lamps, elegant pendant lights are suspended from the ceiling above each nightstand. A cozy duvet and some patterned pillows add color and comfort.

• The old dressers were also staying. They were a wedding present, so they have sentimental value. They were refaced with a veneer of new contrasting wood laminates and some snazzy new hardware. These dated dressers became stylish pieces that will last for decades more.

• The master bedroom was huge, so the team applied molding across the vast expanse of ceiling for an inexpensive coffered look. The walls were dressed up with some thin batten molding to add visual interest.

• A comfy beige sofa and patterned armchair, both perfect for curling up with a book or magazine, sit atop a beautiful area rug over by the window. A wall-mounted TV is positioned above one of the refinished dressers, and an oval coffee table with an antiqued mirror top adds a touch of elegance to the lounge area.

• Although most of the fabrics are neutral, Olson added a big punch of color with varying shades of blue in cushions, draperies and accessories.
