The winter storm brewing in the Midwest just in time to wreak havoc for holiday travelers has prompted Delta Air Lines to allow passengers flying through the area to rebook without incurring the standard change fees.

Delta is the parent of Twin Cities-based Northwest Airlines.

The waiver applies to travel Tuesday through Sunday. New tickets must be reissued on or before Sunday to qualify. The new travel must begin no later than Jan. 1.

Passengers are entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled, Delta said. If it's not canceled, they're entitled to make a one-time change to their ticket without a fee if they are scheduled on those dates.

The states included: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Fee waivers are common when bad weather is expected to cause widespread delays. Delta issued one earlier this week because of the winter storm that socked in much of the East Coast.
