Minnesota's firearms deer opener is one of the busiest times of the year for DNR conservation officers. Here are some of their reports: •From conservation officer Mark Fredin of Aurora: "The award for most unethical activity goes to a man who was with his two kids stopped on the road and had his 15-year-old daughter take three shots from the road at a group of deer in a hay field while the landowner watched from his stand.'' •Near Isle, a hunter complained to officer Mike Lee that other hunters had built "skyscraper'' permanent tree stands on public land. Lee found one stand was 26 feet tall, and the other was nearly 24 feet. Permanent stands can be no higher than 16 feet. •Several hunting accidents were reported over the deer opener. In one case near Willow River, a shotgun slug grazed the side of a hunter's head. In another case, a 52-year-old man near Moorhead shot himself when he put his hand over the end of the 20 gauge barrel while getting up. His safety wasn't on. •An elk has been captured on trail cameras recently near Waconia. •A hunting dog was killed in a conibear trap near Worthington. Page 51 of the DNR's regulation booklet explains how to release a dog from such a trap. •A black bear was hit and killed by a combine near Red Wing last week.
