Details on proposed deer-permit area changes
Deer permit area (DPA) 118
Part of the proposed moose zone, but containing what traditionally have been reasonably good deer hunting areas, this permit area, including parts of the BWCA, will be managed for four to six deer per square mile.
Deer permit area 122 — Will become DPA 130
Within moose range, this area has moderate deer productivity and concentrations of wintering deer yet will be managed for moose. Deer will be at held to three to five per square mile.
Permit area 126
Primarily moose range, deer will be managed just above their recent historic low of about three per square mile.
Permit area 127 — Will become DPA 131
This will be primarily moose range. The area has low deer harvests and moderate moose numbers. Deer density goal is about two per square mile.
Permit area 176
This area will be managed for deer, with a whitetail population goal of six to 10 deer per square mile, or possibly higher.
Permit area 178
178 will be smaller with an emphasis on deer management. Goal is to stabilize deer between 13 to 16 per square mile.
Permit area 181
181 will be slightly smaller and managed for deer. The whitetail goal is to stabilize deer at 13 to 18 per square mile.
Permit area 180 — Will become DPA 132
Deer management will be emphasized, with a goal to increase deer densities of five to seven per square mile, or possibly higher.
New permit area 133
Few moose are here. Goal is to increase deer to about five per square mile. State parks and cities can host special deer hunts as needed.
