Federal drug agents have searched and closed a pharmacy in Bloomington that specializes in long-term care treatments, authorities said Thursday.

The offices of Geritom Medical on Florida Avenue, a few blocks north of Old Shakopee Road, were searched during regular business hours Wednesday by agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), according to Bloomington police.

City police officers were on hand to "provide a uniform presence," Deputy Police Chief Rick Hart said.

Federal authorities would not comment Thursday about the search.

Geritom's executives have not been available to explain the federal government's action. Its home page reads, "Due to uncontrollable circumstances Geritom is closed today."

Calls Thursday morning to Geritom were greeted with a recording that said, "We have had a business interruption," adding that it hopes to be open again "soon."

According to Geritom's website, the company was founded in 1991 by Thomas D. Smith "on Christian values and a strong commitment to serve and support those with long-term care needs and complex diseases."

Geritom goes on to describe itself as "one of the top independent non-chain pharmacies in the country," serving more than 8,000 customers and 1,000 facilities in the Twin Cities area.
