Day 3 at Augusta

Keep that card

Bernhard Langer: The two-time Masters winner and Champions Tour star — who at 58 is 10 years older than Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy combined — fired a 2-under 70. Langer won the second of his green jackets on Easter Sunday 1993, three months before Spieth was born.

Toss that card

Rory McIlroy: The career grand slam will probably have to wait at least one more year. McIlroy limped to a 5-over 77, including a double-bogey six on No. 11, putting him five shots off the lead. McIlroy failed to make a birdie during a major for the first time in 80 rounds.

On the course with …

Bubba Watson: He was the first player off in the morning and paired with a non-scoring marker, Augusta member Jeff Knox. Watson carded a 4-over 76 in the breezy conditions. That left him at 10 over for the tournament and on pace for his worst performance in eight Master appearances. "The golf course beat me this year, so I've just got to improve, try to get better around this place," the two-time winner said.

Masters moment

Yes, it was windy as Augusta National on Saturday (how windy was it?). Billy Horschel ran an eagle putt 13 feet past the hole on No. 15. After he marked the ball, a gust of wind picked up so hard it blew the ball off the green and into the pond. He had to take a drop. Horschel argued with on-course officials, but, "all in all, it was a really good bogey," Horschel said, noting he kept his language clean while pleading his case.

Chip shots

• This is Spieth's third Masters. He's been in Sunday's final pairing all three times.

• Smylie Kaufman got into contention with a Saturday-best 3-under 69. He's one shot back of Spieth, aiming to become the fourth player to win the Masters in his debut.

• It was a rollercoaster day for 1987 Masters winner Larry Mize. The 57-year-old birdied the first three holes, then bogeyed the next four and finished with a 78.

• The Masters purse was announced to be $10 million for the second year in a row.

Key hole

Par-4, 434-yard No 7: All 18 holes at Augusta played "difficult" on Saturday but none moreso than the seventh. The tight fairway was tough to hit with the winds, leading to just as many pars (24) as bogeys. The hole played more than a half-stroke over par.

Quote of the day

"He was probably 1,000-0 against me."

— Kaufman, recalling his junior golf days playing against Spieth.

Tweet of the day

"Mr Langer is some player at Augusta National. Age means nothing, experience is everything. Incredible."

— @IanJamesPoulter.

Day 4

The weather forecast calls for much calmer conditions Sunday. Let's hope for some red numbers for a nice change of pace. Ch. 4 has coverage beginning at 1 p.m.
