Lula Washington Dance Theatre

Friday: As it prepares for its 35th anniversary celebration in Los Angeles in November, Washington's company returns to the Twin Cities with its unique blend of West African-influenced dance and contemporary styles. Having grown up in a housing project in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts, Washington found inspiration to study dance after seeing the Alvin Ailey dance company at UCLA. Today, her company continues a mission to reach out to underserved communities, working with youths to offer the gift of dance. This summer, the company worked with the Twin Cities Harambee, a consortium of youth organizations focused on African and African-American culture. That group will perform right before Washington's troupe, as a kind of opening act, at 6:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. Fri., Ordway Music Theater, 345 Washington St., St. Paul, $23-$45, 651-224-4222, ordway.org.)
