A teenage driver ran off an Eagan road, struck a power pole and was thrown from his vehicle and killed early Sunday, authorities said.
Max Lowell, 16, was a junior at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, according to school officials.
The crash about 12:20 a.m. in the 900 block of Cliff Road knocked out electricity in the area and forced the closure of parts of the major thoroughfare as daybreak came, police said.
The road was reopened about noon, Eagan police Sgt. John Collins said Sunday night.
A Dakota Electric Association spokesman said that power had been restored in stages overnight to the nearly 600 customers who lost electricity.
Lowell's identity had yet to be confirmed Sunday by authorities. But school administrators notified students and others on Sunday that Lowell had died in a car accident, and that a prayer service was to be held Monday morning.
Guidance counselors also would be made available to students in the days and weeks ahead, a school e-mail said.
There was no immediate word on why the eastbound car left the road. Authorities were investigating. Preliminary information, according to police, indicated that the teen was not wearing his seat belt.
