Anglers wanting to get a jump on the fishing season gathered Saturday on Lake Minnetonka for the Minnesota Bound Crappie Contest.

The sun shone, the wind blew — and the fish were biting, as boatloads of anglers competed for the grand prize of a new boat, motor and trailer, with a trolling motor and gift cards also at stake.

Michael Estrem, 13, of Tonka Bay, won the grand prize. His fish, weighing .96 pounds, was closest to the secret weight of .97.

Jim Meyer, Chanhassen, was the adult with the biggest crappie, 1.61 pounds.
