Today-July 18: The city of Winona, about 110 miles southeast of St. Paul, has a distinguished musical history: From 1908 to 1912, the remarkable composer Carl Ruggles led its orchestra. In recent years, the Winona Beethoven Festival has been a magnet for visitors. Some of this year's festival concerts are sold out, but some are not, including a piano recital by the marvelous, Seattle-based Craig Sheppard (7:30 p.m. June 29, St. Cecilia Theater, Cotter High School), two performances by choral legend Dale Warland and the Festival Chorale (7:30 p.m. July 10 and 3 p.m. July 11, Chapel of St. Mary of the Angels) and violinist Midori (7:30 p.m. July 13 (Somsen Auditorium, Winona State University). There's also a free outdoor pops concert by the Minnesota Orchestra in Lake Park on July 1 (8 p.m.). ($17-$25. 507-457-1715 or www.mnbeethoven festival.com.) LARRY FUCHSBERG
