Hundreds mourned and protested Saturday at gatherings held in the wake of Saturday night's fatal police shooting of a 31-year-old black man in north Minneapolis.
The national student-led campaign for gun control came to the Twin Cities Sunday as survivors of the Valentine's Day school shooting in Parkland, Fla., and their local allies registered young voters in Minneapolis and held an emotional town hall meeting in Osseo.
Community members gathered at the intersection of 47th and and Camden Avenue N. to remember Thurman Blevins Sunday evening. Earlier in the day, about 300 people attended a peaceful afternoon protest at police Fourth Precinct headquarters to protest Thurman Blevins' killing. Manuel Moore spoke about his brother and asked for a peaceful protest in front of the police station on Plymouth Avenue in response.
As a decision looms over whether Minneapolis should change its zoning rules to invite a flood of multifamily housing, residents are taking sides in the fight over fourplexes.
"We say just wait, it will get worse. Right now we are at that 'worst' period," said Minnesota Department of Transportation Commissioner Charlie Zelle. "There is no way to sugarcoat it. The most disruptive points will be in the next few months."
