One Vikings rookie returned to practice Tuesday while another remained sidelined.

Rookie running back Toby Gerhart was back on the field after missing Monday's practice because of a minor right knee injury. Gerhart said his knee got bent backward in a pile in the third quarter of Saturday's game against Seattle.

A bigger concern now is the health of right cornerback Chris Cook, who also injured his right knee in the third quarter Saturday. Cook described it as a "ding" after the game but he is not practicing for the second consecutive day.

If healthy, Cook has a very good shot to open the season as the starter on the right side.

Other players not on the field for the first part of practice were safety Jamarca Sanford, tight end Garrett Mills, center John Sullivan (calf), defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy and wide receiver Logan Payne (ribs).

Offensive tackle Bill Noethlich and wide receiver Marko Mitchell also were absent and it sounds like those two were placed on waivers. The Vikings have not made an official announcement but teams must trim their rosters to 75 players by this afternoon.

The Vikings waived linebacker J Leman on Monday. The Vikings must make one more roster move to get to the limit.

The Vikings are holding a short practice in shells. Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is scheduled to address reporters afterward.

We'll be back shortly with updates from access.
