Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty got the Stephen Colbert treatment last night as the Comedy Central satirist devoted a six-minute segment to the former Minnesota governor.
“Tim Pawlenty might not be running for president of the United States,” Colbert said, “but he’s clearly running for president of the next Transformers movie.”
“Listen to that explosive handshake,” Colbert joked, showing a snippet where a loud sound effect is played over video of a handshake. “It's a weapon of mass introduction.”
Colbert then trotted out footage from Pawlenty’s speech at the National Press Club, which the campaign video draws from, showing that the speech didn’t have the same pizzazz without the sound effects and soundtrack.
But the best part of Colbert’s shtick was a parody of Pawlenty’s video, where Colbert throws in one-liners like: “I believe our nation is the most American country the United States has ever known.”
The good news for Pawlenty is that his videos, even while being mocked, reached an audience on Comedy Central that possibly hadn’t seen them before.
At the end of the segment, Colbert pledged his support to Pawlenty should he “change his mind” and run for president. Colbert even created a "Colbert PAC" website with a logo that bears a striking resemblance to the former Minnesota governor’s.
