Four former clients of two recently disbarred Minneapolis lawyers were paid a total of $13,507 last month to make up for money or property their lawyers stole from them, according to an announcement by the Minnesota Client Security Board this week. At the board's January meeting, a total of $6,840 was approved for three clients of Albert A. Garcia Jr. and $6,667 for a client of Michael Frants. Frants was disbarred in late 2009 and Garcia's disbarment occurred a year later. The fund is meant to compensate for loss due to theft, but not for negligence or malpractice. All active Minnesota lawyers pay into the fund, which receives no public money. The seven-member board, made up mainly of lawyers, serves on a voluntary basis.
