For its 2016 gala, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Upper Midwest drew hundreds to the Depot in Minneapolis. The event, which had the theme of "The Greatest Gift Is Love," included a cocktail hour, dinner and dancing as well as silent and live auctions. All proceeds went to help keep families together during a child's serious illness. With four locations, two guest houses and two family rooms located in Twin Cities hospitals, the charity serves more than 4,500 families each year, offering lodging, meals, schooling and recreation facilities.
In the five years since a brawl outside of a Longfellow bar left a man dead and McDonald convicted of manslaughter, McDonald has risen to legendary status among her supporters and admirers, who credit her with sparking a small revolution that raised the visibility of transgender women of color and the dangers that follow them.
