The Wayzata boys' golf team didn't settle for being runner-up this year.

After claiming second in consecutive seasons, Wayzata won the Class 3A team title Wednesday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. The Trojans shot a two-day total of 607 and edged defending champion Edina by three shots, after losing to the Hornets and Eden Prairie by one stroke in the past two years at state. Lakeville South placed third at 612.

"We've had a great run over the last few years," Wayzata coach Allan Christopherson said. "A lot of these kids have been a part of our program over that period. To get back on top, it feels good."

Wayzata was tied for first place with Edina and White Bear Lake after the first day. With four seniors on the team, the Trojans had the second-best round of the day (after Lake- ville South's 303), shooting 305. They stumbled through the back nine but built a big enough lead on the front to hold off Edina, which shot 308.

"[Edina] didn't play their best, and we certainly didn't play our best here, but we both came out and battled," Wayzata senior Alex Beversdorf said. "We were finally able to beat them. It really doesn't matter at this point to be honest [that we didn't play well]. We got the job done."

Senior Bobby Frazzini and sophomore Ben Frazzini each shot a team-best 151 through the two-day tournament and tied for 10th individually.

Medalist but barely

Moorhead senior Dane Sethre-Hofstad shot a 69 on the final day to claim the individual state title. He won by one stroke over Owatonna senior Peter Jones, who barely missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole that would've made him co-champion.

"A couple of my buddies wanted to get some food, and I couldn't eat anything," Sethre-Hofstad said. "I was really rattled. It's just a great feeling right now."
