Someone at your door? Check their ID.

The City Council on Friday approved new rules that require door-to-door salespeople to display photo identification. The move is intended to help people distinguish genuine solicitors from swindlers and scam artists.

Previously, solicitors only needed to carry the ID rather than wear it.

The new rules simultaneously loosen restrictions on people going door-to-door for a political or religious cause. They will no longer be required to register, and will not have to obtain an ID.

Council Member Gary Schiff, a co-sponsor of the bill, said a primary focus is to eliminate door-to-door magazine crews that exploit youth workers.
