Take a red grape associated with Italy, another with France and finally one from California. Blend them, and what do you get? In the case of the Whiplash "Redemption" 2009 ($12), a whole lot of deliciousness.

This mix of barbera, syrah and zinfandel delivers rich fruit, firm and dusty tannins and a persistent finish. It is the best cheeseburger wine I've come across all winter, and also should pair well with pizza and meaty or meatless winter stews.

Available at the munis in Buffalo, Edina, Lakeville and North Branch, plus Chicago-Lake, Sarrack's, Lakeside and others.
