recent events

July 24: Baltimore Ravens star Ray Rice is suspended two games by the NFL for domestic violence.

Aug. 28: After NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell drew criticism for not being tough enough on Rice, he tells NFL owners that he "didn't get it right." First-time domestic violence offenders now face a six-game suspension.

Aug. 31: San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald is arrested after an altercation with his pregnant fiancée, who the police said had visible injuries. McDonald has not been charged and continues to play. The team's chief executive, Jed York, told a San Francisco radio station that he would not punish McDonald until he sees "evidence that it should be done or before an entire legal police investigation shows us something."

Sept. 7: Defensive end Greg Hardy starts the Carolina Panthers' season opener with no new developments in his domestic violence case. In July, Hardy was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and threatening to kill her. He appealed the conviction and he awaits a jury trial slated for Nov. 17. Sept. 13: Vikings running back Adrian Peterson surrenders to Montgomery County, Texas, authorities after being charged with child abuse.
