Gophers replay

Gophers 24, San Jose State 7

The recap: The Gophers jumped to a 10-0 first-quarter lead but had trouble putting the game away, despite five Spartans turnovers. Tailback David Cobb and quarterback Chris Streveler combined for 52 rushes for 369 yards.

What was learned: In his first career start, Streveler showed off his wheels but couldn't quiet questions about his throwing arm. He completed only one of seven passes for 7 yards. The completion came with 6 minutes, 36 seconds remaining.

YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED:

• Linebacker Damien Wilson forced a big fumble and recovered himself at Minnesota's 7. He still leads the Big Ten in tackles, with 11.0 per game.

• Marcus Jones suffered a hand injury, so true freshman Craig James returned punts. Otherwise, the Gophers came out pretty well health-wise.

• The Gophers ran the no-huddle offense late in the first half, knowing it played to Streveler's strengths. He went 22-2 in high school, running a no-huddle offense at Marian Central Catholic in Illinois.

• For the second consecutive week, the Gophers blanked their opponent after halftime.

The skinny: Michigan AD Dave Brandon gave assurances before the season that fourth-year coach Brady Hoke wasn't on the hot seat, but that talk has ramped up after losses to Notre Dame (31-0) and Utah (26-10). Quarterback Devin Gardner has seven turnovers over the past three games. Hoke replaced him with Saturday with Shane Morris, and afterward, Hoke said he wasn't sure who would start against the Gophers. Michigan will try to turn the page for the start of Big Ten play, but the fans are restless.
