COMING UP BIG
Sophomore safety Derrick Wells wasn't a top recruit, but he's turning into a top player for the Gophers. Here are three things to know:
Late bloomer
• Wells, a Florida native, committed to the Gophers shortly before signing day in 2011. The only other school interested was Ball State.
Still growing
• Wells is 6 feet tall and weighed 175 pounds when arrived at Minnesota. He is around 200 now.
Fast start
• He leads the Gophers in tackles (26), interceptions (two) and passes defended (seven).
