The onetime finance manager for a youth athletic association in Rosemount siphoned more than $113,000 from the organization's account by writing checks to himself and then cooking the books, according to charges filed Thursday.

Robert S. Reischauer's greediest stretch during the two-plus years of thievery, prosecutors alleged, was a six-month period when he stole more than $48,000.

Reischauer, 62, of Apple Valley, who for 27 years was paid to handle the finances for the Rosemount Area Athletic Association, was charged by summons in Dakota County District Court with five counts of theft. He's scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 11.

"This major economic crime is the 14th case involving losses in excess of $100,000 charged in Dakota County since 2009," County Attorney James Backstrom said in a statement announcing the charges. "Financial crimes against organizations involving youth are especially troubling."

The nonprofit association said it learned of the questionable transactions, which spanned from March 2011 until August 2013, during an audit initiated in September 2013 ahead of hiring a different finance manager.

Reischauer allegedly stole a total of $113,532, money that was intended to help finance a wide range of sports for boys and girls organized by volunteers: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball.

Along with making out checks to himself and then deleting the transactions from the accounting records, Reischauer also made payments to his PayPal and Amazon online accounts with association money, according to the complaint.

A telephone message was left at Reischauer's home seeking a comment about the charges.
