A St. Paul man was charged Monday with robbing and injuring a good Samaritan he had tricked into giving him a ride.

Daulon I. Sampson, 31, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with one count of aggravated first-degree robbery in the Feb. 18 incident that left a 76-year-old victim with a broken leg and arm.

According to the complaint: Sampson met his victim at the counter of a SuperAmerica gas station in the 900 block of University Avenue and asked for a ride. The victim drove Sampson to Lafond Avenue and Milton Street. Sampson told the victim his door was stuck, and the man exited the car to open it from the outside.

"As [the man] was walking around the front of the vehicle, the suspect got out and tackled [him] to the ground," the complaint said. "[Sampson] hit [the man] with something."

Sampson "violently" ripped off the man's jacket, which contained a wallet and cellphone, and fled on foot.

The victim was found about 10:40 p.m. in the middle of the intersection with a broken leg, broken arm and cuts on his neck, elbows and under his nose.

Police tracked the victim's cellphone to an apartment building in the 900 block of Lafond and when they called the phone, it rang from inside a dumpster, the complaint said. The garbage bag also contained the victim's health insurance card and a prescription box for Sampson's girlfriend.

Police arrived at the couple's apartment on Saturday to serve a search warrant, prompting Sampson to dive through a glass window in the bedroom. He was arrested outside.

In a police interview, Sampson admitted that he asked the man for a ride, but denied robbing him. The victim identified Sampson as his attacker.

Sampson's record includes convictions for theft, identity theft, domestic assault by strangulation and burglary.
