A meetup on the street for an illicit drug deal in Brooklyn Center turned into a robbery attempt and then the murder of a 31-year-old man, according to charges filed Thursday.

Lannon L. Burdunice, 25, of Minneapolis, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree murder stemming from the shooting Tuesday afternoon near 66th Avenue N. and Camden Avenue. Burdunice remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.

The Hennepin County medical examiner's office identified the victim as Joshua Bruce Hofmann, 31, of Mounds View.

Court documents also identified a woman in the car with him as his girlfriend, Kaitlyn G. Schroeder, 21, of Minneapolis. Schroeder said on a fund-raising page seeking money for his funeral that she had been his girlfriend for the past year and a half.

According to the criminal complaint:

Officers answering a call about shots being fired came up to the car and saw Hofmann behind the wheel, bloodied and already dead. Two $20 bills were at his feet.

"Crying and hysterical," Schroeder said she and Hofmann arranged to buy marijuana from Burdunice. Instead, Burdunice attempted to rob Hofmann at gunpoint of $40 and then shot him.

Schroeder pointed out a townhouse and told police that Burdunice fled there. Officers ordered everyone inside to come out, and Burdunice complied and was arrested.

Police searched Burdunice's home and found a 9mm handgun under an outdoor deck. Officers found 9mm shell casings near the scene of the shooting.

Burdunice's criminal history includes convictions for second-degree assault, violating a no-contact order and terroristic threats. He also has a pending charge of domestic assault.
