Chanhassen Dinner Theatres has announced two shows to follow its mainstage hit, "Hairspray." The suburban playhouse will open "Xanadu" on June 1, to be followed with "Bye Bye Birdie" on Oct. 5. Both are new productions for Chanhassen — something that is almost unbelievable given that "Birdie" has been around since 1960.

"Xanadu" is based on the 1980 film starring Olivia Newton-John as a Greek muse who comes to Venice Beach, California, and inspires a struggling artist to create a roller disco. The Broadway musical, which opened in 2007, succeeded in part because it satirized the film. No word on casting at Chanhassen yet.

"Birdie" won the Tony in 1960 and was then made into a movie with Dick Van Dyke, Ann-Margret and Paul Lynde. It has been a staple of high school and community theaters for decades. Broadway revived it in 2009. The Charles Strouse score includes "Telephone Hour," "Kids," "Put On A Happy Face" and "Going Steady" among others. The play focuses on Conrad Birdie, a rock star who has chosen a girl for his last kiss before he enters the Army.

Ironically, "Birdie" takes place in the same time era as "Hairspray," which looks back on the early 1960s through satiric nostalgia. "Hairspray" was recently extended to May 26.
