The city's East Side and North End in particular have been dealing with gunfire. Earlier this month, a 2-year-old girl was critically injured when she was struck by a bullet during a shooting in her North End backyard. On Saturday, a 19-year-old man was shot to death outside an apartment building near the Capitol.
As the tallgrass prairie has disappeared across much of Minnesota, the Dakota skipper has nearly vanished. Just 1 percent of the native prairie remains, and the small brown-gold butterfly is considered threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act — one of two Minnesota butterflies on the list. In a rescue effort, researchers at the Minnesota Zoo have been breeding Dakota skippers in captivity, and now, for the first time, the imperiled butterfly is being reintroduced into the wild.
In Wednesday morning's oral arguments in the Minnesota Court of Appeals for Minnesota's teacher tenure lawsuit — the third of its kind nationally — an attorney for the parents argued that students' right to an adequate education calls for the dismantling of the tenure laws. Defense attorneys for the state fired back that teacher quality is an issue for the Legislature, not the courts, and that previous cases make the arguments worthless.
