Here's the kind of philanthropy we can all get behind: Caribou Coffee's buy-a-pound-we-donate-a-pound coffee offer.

Here's how it works. Every time a customer purchases a pound of Caribou's Pass the Goodness blend of coffee beans (either in a Caribou store or online), the Brooklyn Center-based chain donates a pound of its house "Caribou" pre-ground blend to local food shelves where the company does business (in Minnesota it's the Emergency Foodshelf Network).

The offer runs through Feb. 28.

"Our goal is to raise 35,000 pounds of coffee," said Caribou brand manager Jake Miller. "Coffee is a highly requested item at food shelves, but it's not frequently donated. We thought we could help."
