A little hat-itude can really up your winter style. Milliner Angie Hall Sandifer has been hand-making hats since 2005. Her winter collection is available in cloches ($125 to $150 each) with grosgrain ribbon trim. The materials include felt, velour felt and beaver fur felt, such as these hats in a rich leopard print (wide-brim hat, $250; cloche, $150; fedora, $225). Pick from the bunch or have the artist make one just for you -- that will surely make you feel special and your ears warm. Don't forget to moisturize

Low temperatures, wind and dry indoor heat put skin on a moisture-deprivation roller coaster. Try a new potion, such as Origins Nourishing Face Lotion ($42.50, www.origins.com). It's 95 percent certified organic and feels like lotion, but acts like a rich cream. Boots Mediterranean Olive Sage Almond Wonderbalm ($8.99, Target) is an all-in-one product that works great on thirsty elbows, knees and hands with a light, soothing almond scent. If you prefer fragrance-free, try pure shea butter (L'Occitane makes this mini-tin, $8, www.loccitane.com) on dry lips, cuticles and everywhere else. Warm it up in your hands for maximum coverage.

Go warm, not bulky

If you're trying to avoid going puffy or furry, try wool. The plaid Ted Baker coat (near right, $598, from Stephanie's) puts a modern twist on a trench coat. While the camel coat (middle, on sale for $129 from Banana Republic) isn't made of thick wool, its shearling collar is as cozy as can be. At the top of the pile, this green textured coat (Twill Twenty Two, $328, from Stephanie's) mixes tough military style with a softer asymmetrical closure and drop-waist peplum. It's made from 100 percent wool, giving you enough armor to fend off the freeze. Saks Off Fifth, 655 Nicollet Mall, Mpls., 612-333-7200. Stephanie's, 758 S. Cleveland Av., St. Paul, 651-690-3802. Banana Republic, see www.bananarepublic.com for locations.

Give cold toes the boot

Living in Minnesota, we need a full boots wardrobe. Luckily, most styles are already on sale, so it's a good time to pick up a new pair. The ankle boots at far left (La Canadienne, originally $280, now on sale for $140, at Pumpz & Company), this season's hottest look, may look short, but they are guaranteed waterproof, something even Uggs can't claim. The bright red boots ($287.50, from Pumpz & Company) are made of very soft suede and faux fur lining. Second from left, the Merrell boots ($149, from Shu Global Footwear) and at far right, the Earth "Lodge" boots ($159, from Shu Global Footwear) are highly functional thanks to thick soles and Thinsulate lining. Pumpz & Co., Galleria (east end), Edina, 952-926-2252, www.pumpzco.com, Shu Global Footwear, two locations, 3832 Grand Way, St. Louis Park, 952-926-3599, and 1041 Grand Av., St. Paul, 651-224-3570.

Head-to-toe winter makeover

Fedora in beaver fur felt ($225, Angie's Hats; see E1 for information). Made in Poland, the Mackage coat ($399, Saks Off Fifth) is an extra thick wool-angora blend, designed to withstand freezing weather. That drama collar certainly helps, too. Lilibleu sweater dress ($138) and suede lace-up gloves ($58), both from Stephanie's. Donald Pliner boots, $237.50 (marked down from $475), from Pumpz & Co.

Wear long johns like tights

Fabric technology and fashion have made it possible to create a warm and stylish winter look. Layer your silky long underwear, such as these soft Cuddl Duds ($26, Macy's), under your clothes. With a short-sleeve cashmere dress (Autumn Cashmere, $365, from Stephanie's) like this one, it's actually preferable to have them showing. However, wear socks and boots (tall or ankle-high), so that the long-underwear leggings with lace detail ($24) look more like tights. The top under-layer (Cuddl Duds, $26) is actually a line called "climatesmart"-- which features breathable Coolmax. So if you overlayer and overheat, it will wick away the moisture. Another option? Winter leggings (American Apparel, $38) are opaque thick stretch terry in 95 percent cotton. Men, you can try the lightweight warm underwear from Alfani Now (from Macy's). Cuddl Duds, from Macy's, see www.macys.com for locations. American Apparel, 1433 W. Lake St., Mpls, 612-825-3000.
