Private jet crashes into homes, 2 killed
A private jet crashed Sunday near the South Bend Regional Airport, hitting three homes and killing two people aboard the plane, authorities said. The Beechcraft Premier I twin-jet had left Riverside Airport in Tulsa, Okla., said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig in Oklahoma City. South Bend Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Maggie Scroope said three people were being treated there. One was in serious condition and two were in fair condition.

Man, boy die as race car hurls off track
A teenage race car driver taking warm-up laps at a California raceway drove off the track and into pit row, killing a 14-year-old boy and 68-year-old man. They were the cousin of the driver and the car owner, officials said. Six or seven cars were on the track at Marysville Raceway Park, about 40 miles north of Sacramento Saturday night when the out-of-control car ran into the two victims.

Vigilantes hang two thieves by feet
Egyptian vigilantes beat two men accused of stealing a motorized rickshaw and then hung them by their feet while some in a watching crowd chanted "kill them!" Both men died, security officials said. The killings come a week after the attorney general's office encouraged civilians to arrest lawbreakers and hand them over to police. They are emblematic of the chaos and security breakdown that is sweeping Egypt.

Parliament delays vote on new tax on deposits
The Cyprus parliament postponed until Monday a vote on a new bank depositors' tax, a measure that was agreed upon to secure a long-awaited bailout. That bailout, of as much as $13 billion, was secured Saturday to bolster Cyprus' troubled banking sector and public finances. But bank depositors will take a significant hit through the controversial new tax — deposits up to $144,000 euros will be levied at 6.75 percent. The tax on larger deposits will be 9.9 percent.

Palestinian will end hunger strike in deal
A hunger striking Palestinian prisoner has agreed to end his fast under a plea bargain that will confine him to the Gaza Strip for the next 10 years, his lawyer and family said. Ayman Sharawneh, 53, had been refusing food since July to protest his incarceration. His lawyer said Sharawneh, a resident of the West Bank, accepted the offer of confinement to Gaza, fearing he would be sent to prison for decades in a military court hearing set for Monday. Israeli officials had no immediate comment.

Netanyahu names defense minister
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed as defense minister the former military chief Moshe Ya'alon, a hard-liner on the Palestinian peace process. Netanyahu gave Cabinet posts to Likud Party colleagues, a day after informing President Shimon Peres that he had succeeded in forming a coalition after six weeks of talks. The new coalition is expected to be sworn in Monday.

Man detained in death of New York tourist
A 46-year-old homeless man suspected in the killing of a New York City woman found dead in Istanbul last month was taken into custody near the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkish authorities said. Sarai Sierra, 33, had been touring alone in Turkey in January when she disappeared. Her body was discovered on Feb. 2 near the walls of the Old City.

Five confess in rape of Swiss woman
Five men have been arrested and have confessed to raping a Swiss woman who was attacked while on a cycling vacation with her husband, police said. The five men arrested in Datia on Sunday are from villages near where the attack occurred Friday night as the Swiss couple camped in a forest in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh state.
