MILWAUKEE — The Atlanta Braves placed infielder Ramiro Pena on the 15-day disabled list due to a right shoulder strain.

The Braves' primary backup infielder had been out since June 17 with soreness in the same shoulder he had surgery on seven years ago.

Pena is batting .278 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 50 games this season. He was examined by team doctors Friday and will seek a second opinion to determine what is causing the shoulder aliment.

The Braves recalled infielder Paul Janish from Triple-A Gwinnett. The move excited Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez especially after what Janish did last season following his acquisition from the Cincinnati Reds in a midseason trade.
