As much as the crowd held him up as some kind of western-shirt-wearing deity Tuesday night -- as is described in the full concert review -- Justin Vernon really played the role of humble Wisconsinite on opening night of Bon Iver's two-night stand at the Orpheum. He marveled over the fact he was on the same stage where, at age 14, he saw John Prine perform (too bad he didn't drop in his cover of "Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)" to bring things full-circle). He also threw out many an aw-shucks-style thank-you to the sold-out crowd, and often sounded nervous as he talked between songs.

A good chunk of Vernon's family and Twin Cities musician friends were in attendance. So were plenty of fellow UW– Eau Claire alum, who cheered when he introduced "Towers" by recounting the dormitory of the same name. Then again, the crowd pretty well went ape-spit every time Vernon said or did anything. Most of the songs in the set deserved the rabid reception, though. Here's the whole set list:

Perth / Minnesota, WI / Holocene / Towers / Creature Fear / Beach Baby / Hinnom, TX / Wash. / Blood Bank / Re: Stacks / Michicant / Calgary / Beth/Rest / For Emma ENCORE: Flume / Skinny Love / The Wolves (Act I and II)

For those who didn't already know of her decade-plus career, Kathleen Edwards proved Tuesday she deserved the opening slot on the tour whatever her relationship with Vernon. With a guitarist and keyboardist by her side, the Canadian songstress impressed the indie-rabid crowd with a stunningly gorgeous cover of the Flaming Lips' "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate" (although, she too should have dropped in the Prine song she often plays). Her own bruised anthems fared well, too, especially the rocked-up version of "Back to Me."
