So a city water department employee looks around the city truck he's driving Wednesday morning and notices something unusual stuck to the truck's frame: a "small black cylinder device with wires and large magnet duck taped to it..." according to the police report. He's at Lincoln Street NE and Lowry Avenue NE at 7:55 a.m. The bomb squad comes out, determines it's a fake bomb, and removes it. The worker goes back to work. Case closed. Except that it turns out that the person who placed it there was another city employee, according to police. Apparently it was a hoax.

Get it?

Neither did the city, which put out this official statement on Friday afternoon:

The City of Minneapolis takes security and public safety at our facilities very seriously. This week, we had an employee who saw what he felt was a security threat and did the right thing by calling the police right away, but it turned out to be a hoax. This is an unfortunate situation. Public Works administration is investigating this situation and will take appropriate action.
