Dive teams have recovered the body of a 20-year-old Minnesota man who jumped into the St. Croix River from a rock ledge on the Wisconsin side, an activity that authorities not only frown upon but say is illegal.

"People jump for recreation" at this spot north of the Franconia Landing northeast of the Twin Cities, said Chad Worden, Chisago County chief sheriff's deputy.

"Cliff jumping is illegal," and violators are subject to citation by the National Park Service, Worden added.

Search teams found the body of Alex William Vitalis of Taylors Falls about noon Tuesday, not far from where he jumped on Monday, Worden said.

He was with a group of young people when he jumped from a ledge that varies in height from 20 to 40 feet above the river, the chief deputy said.

The search stretched well into the night Monday and was called off about 9:30 p.m. because of darkness.

Agencies involved in the search included the Chisago County Water Patrol, the Taylors Falls Fire Department and the National Park Service.
