DAKAR, Senegal — A boat that ran aground off the coast of Senegal's capital is now leaking diesel fuel into the ocean near some scenic islands.
Senegalese Environment Minister Haidar El Ali said Monday the accident took place Friday near the Madeleine Islands.
The minister said authorities were trying to do all that they can to contain the spill near the islands, whose waters are home to a diverse array of fish.
The boat was carrying some 45,000 liters (nearly 12,000 gallons) of diesel fuel. Crews are trying to get the boat out of the area though initially they had been hampered by high winds.
Senegalese authorities said the Spanish-owned boat had a fishing license from neighboring Mauritania and had stopped in Dakar to refuel.
