A New Brighton psychiatrist who admitted having sex with a patient and calling it therapy has lost his license to practice medicine.

Dr. Thomas Folsom, 53, who pleaded guilty in July to one count of criminal sexual conduct, had his licensed revoked Wednesday by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. He had stopped practicing medicine voluntarily a year ago after charges were filed, according to the board. Folsom is scheduled to be sentenced in September in Hennepin County District Court.

According to the charges, Folsom began a sexual relationship in 2001 with a patient who had been hospitalized for depression and an eating disorder. The woman said Folsom told her he was doing her a favor by engaging in sex with her. After charging about $77,000 in fees, he told her he would continue working with her for free, according to the charges.

Under state law, a physician automatically loses his license if convicted of felony-level criminal sexual conduct.
