A Bloomington man was hospitalized with serious burns after an explosion in his backyard that led to a brief neighborhood evacuation Thursday evening, police said.

The bomb squad recovered suspected flash powder, a substance often used in commercial-grade fireworks, at the residence in the 11000 block of Goodrich Circle. It remains unclear if the man was trying to make fireworks.

Bloomington police will investigate, but "we don't suspect anything other than an accident at this point," said Deputy Chief Denis Otterness.

The homeowner, whose name has not been released, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis following the explosion, which sent shrapnel flying into his chest and caused "significant injuries" to his hand.

A dog in the home also suffered minor burns, but will be fine. The bomb squad located additional quantities of the powder inside the house and disposed of it, Otterness said.

Neighbors living on the cul-de-sac were evacuated for a few hours Thursday evening but returned to their homes by 7 p.m.
